How to Choose an Expert Witness
The difference between Psychiatrists and Psychologists
I have 25 years of experience in Forensic Psychiatry.
I have been retained on over 600 cases.
At this time, 70% of my time is devoted to patient care and 30% is focused on forensic work.
In my opinion, the best preparation for an effective forensic expert is continued excellence in clinical work, particularly the diagnostic interview, and this skill is best developed after years of experience.
Approximately 75% of my forensic cases are civil, 20% criminal and 5% are quasi-criminal (involuntary hospitalization, right to treatment and right to refuse treatment).
In the civil area, I am retained 70% by the defense and 30% by the plaintiff.
In criminal cases, I am retained equally by the state and the defense.
In the civil area, my interests include but are not limited to personal injury, medical malpractice, racial discrimination, sexual harassment, contested wills, toxic exposure and disability cases.
In the criminal area, I am interested in Miranda Rights cases, diminished capacity, insanity defense and various criminal competencies.
I consider the detection of malingering and it's distinction from factitious disorders to be critically important in all forensic examinations.
I have been recognized by attorneys for my ability to diagnose true Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and to distinguish it from the malingered variety.
My work at inner city hospitals has brought me recognition in the assessment of suicide and homicide risk.
I have worked with law firms outside of New Jersey.
I am willing to travel depending on the merits of the case.
I am deposed 5-10 times per year and I testify in court about 4 times per year. I have been told by attorneys that I am an effective witness and that I am quick to tune into the strategy of the adversary attorney.
A complete description of firms that I have worked for is contained on my Curriculum Vitae.
